Change the time, change the batteries

STAFF REPORT

Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, Nov. 1, meaning that clocks will need to be set back one hour.

In 2007, the practice of changing clocks from Daylight Standard Time to Standard Time was extended to the first weekend in November.

Saline County Sheriff Keith Brown also extended a reminder to county residents to change the batteries in their household emergency detectors.

"As we exit October and fire prevention month; this weekend, take a moment to change the batteries in smoke detectors, weather radios, and carbon monoxide detectors," Brown said.

"A working smoke detector can cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half."

By changing the batteries in safety devices twice a year, when the clock is changed, homeowners ensure that they will operate safely throughout the year. It is also advised that smoke detectors be tested after changing batteries, to ensure full function.

Daylight Savings Time will return on Sunday, March 13, 2016, when clocks "Spring forward" one hour.
