CHS FOOTBALL: Yellow Jackets in the playoffs

The Chester Yellow Jackets will welcome Lawrenceville on Saturday at 2 p.m. for their first-round playoff matchup in Class 2A.

Chester's last five postseason runs have all ended on its home field and the Yellow Jackets are 1-5 in their last six playoff games at W.O. Smith Field.

Here's a look at Chester's recent playoff history:

1. 2014 - Tuscola 17, Chester 14:

Chester's best statistical season in school history ended last year with a loss to Tuscola at W.O. Smith Field in the Class 2A Elite Eight.

Tuscola's Josh Knight intercepted a Wyatt Ruehling pass near the Warriors' 10-yard line with under a minute to play to seal the victory.

Tuscola jumped out to a 14-0 lead to start the game and held a 14-7 advantage at halftime. Warriors kicker Evan Sutton booted what would be the game-winning 34-yard field goal with 10:42 left in the game.

Chester finished its season at 10-2.

2. 2013 - Carmi-White County 30, Chester 25:

Carmi-White County quarterback Chase Sailer found Clay Vaught on a 67-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter that gave the Bulldogs a 28-25 lead over the host Yellow Jackets.

Looking for its first postseason victory since 2001, Chester took a 23-22 lead on a touchdown catch by Garret Alms with 3:17 remaining, but Vaught's touchdown came just 28 seconds later.

Brandon Pollard added the two-point conversion for Carmi to give the Bulldogs their five-point lead. Carmi then recovered a Yellow Jacket fumble on the ensuing kickoff to seal the win.

Chester finished its season at 8-2.

3. 2012 - Althoff Catholic 42, Chester 24

Dealt a tough draw by the IHSA, Chester faced off against Althoff Catholic at W.O. Smith Field.

Althoff, which plays a South Seven Conference schedule, dropped to Class 2A due to an IHSA rule that allows teams that haven't won a postseason game in six seasons to drop a class.

A 52-yard touchdown reception by Brad Asselmeier on a pass from Jake Cowan gave Chester a 17-14 lead with 5:41 left in the third quarter.

However, Althoff scored the next three touchdowns and racked up 361 yards of offense against the Yellow Jackets. Althoff would go on to finish runner-up for the Class 2A state championship.

Chester finished its season at 9-1.

4. 2010 - Calhoun 34, Chester 6:

Calhoun broke open a close game with 27 unanswered points to defeat Chester at W.O. Smith Field.

An 82-yard touchdown reception by John Baughman cut an early Chester deficit to 7-6 after a failed two-point conversion.

Calhoun scored on its next drive and held a 13-6 lead at halftime. Chester finished its season at 8-2.

5. 2009 - Red Bud 40, Chester 16:

Red Bud quarterback Jake Hoffman threw for 375 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Musketeers to the victory over Chester at W.O. Smith Field.

Chester held an early 8-7 lead, but Red Bud responded with 33 straight points. The Musketeers held a 19-8 lead at halftime and compiled 509 yards of offense.

Chester finished its season at 7-3.
