Perry County 4-H kids are a-buzzin
Perry County 4H Spin Club Perry-Kids-A-Buzz help Pinckneyville Beekeeper, Nancy Timpner transfer wild bees into a manmade beehive. The wild hive was brought in by Mrs Timpner and fellow beekeeper Jess Will a few weeks ago. The kids helped to get the hive settled into its' new home. Perry Kids A Buzz was formed last spring in an attempt to introduce kids to the art of beekeeping. This group is open to kids 3rd grade and up and will be accepting new members spring of 2016. To be a member you must join Perry County 4H. Interested kids may do so by contacting Rhonda Shubert at Perry County Extension.
Nancy has been beekeeping now for six years in Pinckneyville and teaches Agriculture In The Classroom in Perry County Schools. Nancy was approached last spring in an attempt to teach our Perry County kids new skills. The hive of bees was taken down from a tree on Kathleen Mine Road in an attempt to save them from the cold. The bees would not survive in a structure such as the one pictured here. Why they built their home in this manner is a mystery. Honeybees will not usually build a hive of this type this far north. This is just an ongoing lesson for the kids.
