Sophomore Football:

The Harrisburg High School sophomore football team knocked off Herrin earlier in the week, besting the Tigers 20-14.

Kent Cletcher got the scoring going in the first quarter on a one-yard run, while Hunter Smith provided the extra point to make it 7-0.

Later in the third quarter, Isaiah Saulsberry completed a pass to Presley Gauch for a 33 yard touchdown at the 5:24 mark, but Herrin cut the deficit to six when the Tigers scored on a 50-yard pass play to make it 14-8.

Fletcher scored his second TD of the game with 3:30 to play in the fourth quarter and on the ensuing kicking off Herrin made the return 72 yards for a scored, but missed on their two-point conversion to make it a 20-1-4.

"Defensively, we played really well again," HHS sophomore head coach Kyle McGowan said." They really stepped up at the beginning of the game when Herrin returned the opening kickoff to our 20-yard line and stopped them from scoring. Our offense was inconsistent at times and our line play was good at times but we still need improvement. Coach (Greg) Davis and I are very proud of the kids because this was one of their two losses from last year."

Harrisburg is now a perfect 4-0 on the year as two games were forfeited by Massac County and Benton. Harrisburg's next game will be Tuesday at Murphysboro. The Bulldogs will then play Herrin again the following week as the game was added this week due to the forfeits."
