CHS boys golf finishes second at Pinckneyville Regional

<span>Led by Chester High School junior Baylee Modglin, the Yellow Jacket boys golf team finished runner-up at the Class 1A Pinckneyville Regional on Tuesday at the Red Hawk Country Club. </span>

<span>Nashville won the event with a score of 327 strokes, with Chester finishing nine strokes behind. Sparta and Waterloo-Gibault tied for third place with 339 strokes, but Sparta won the bid via the tie-breaking system and will also advance to Monday's Anna-Jonesboro Sectional as a team.</span>

<span id="docs-internal-guid-0f3ab699-4342-4abc-b6be-7765261dac38"><span>For Chester, this is the program's first trip to sectional competition as a team since 2013 and second in the past 32 years.</span></span>

<span>"The boys battled all day and proved that they were one of the best," said CHS coach Brad Norman. "Baylee Modglin led our team with an unbelievable performance shooting a 77.</span>

<span>"Austin Welge, Brennan White and Joey Schneier were consistent all day and proved why they are part of the varsity team at Chester."</span>

<span>Other teams competing at the regional included Okawville (5th, 340), Steeleville (6</span><span>th</span><span>, 357), Anna-Jonesboro (7</span><span>th</span><span>, 331), Red Bud (8</span><span>th</span><span>, 362), Marissa (9</span><span>th</span><span>, 368), Pinckneyville (10</span><span>th</span><span>, 372), Trico (11</span><span>th</span><span>, 387), Valmeyer (12</span><span>th</span><span>, 395) and New Athens (13</span><span>th</span><span>, 426).</span>

<span>Low medalist for the match was Nashville's Riley Edwards, who shot a 73.</span>

<span>White, a junior, had a good day for the Yellow Jackets with his score of 85. Schneier, a senior, shot 87 and fellow senior Welge also recorded an 87 to round out Chester's team score.</span>

<span>"I can't say enough about these young men," Norman said. "They put the time in over the summer and continued to improve as the season progressed.</span>

<span>"The hard work paid off. These boys aren't finished yet, and hope to do well at sectionals on Monday."</span>

<span>Sparta was led by Andy Cunningham, who had a score of 79 strokes. Chris Brooks carded an 84, while Ryan Ramsey (86) and Brandon Kempfer (90) also contributed to the Bulldogs' team score.</span>

<span>In addition to the top three teams, the top 10 individuals also qualified to advance to the sectional match.</span>

<span>That group was Alex Dietz of Waterloo Gibault (76); Mason Drury of Okawville (77); Zachary Heet of Waterloo Gibault (80); Shane Ganz of Okawville (84); Brock Quigley of Steeleville (85); Brad Fuhrhop of Okawville (85); Jason Merz of Waterloo Gibault (85); Doiron Collin of Red Bud (85); James Batson of Steeleville (86) and Jared Schneider of Red Bud (86).</span>
