Alexa Burtis took the stage, bowed and went out in style

The Harrisburg senior fired an 87 Tuesday at the Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference golf tournament at Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Carbondale, taking medalist honors on Ohio Dxivision side, while Carterville's Avery Rae won medalist honors on the Mississippi side.

Burtis had a front nine 41 to go with a 46 on the back edging Herrin's Macey Mooneyham by one stroke for the individual win.

Skylar Street had a 103 and finished as eighth pace as an individual for the Bulldogs, who didn't play as a full team.

Both girls started their rounds Tuesday on the backside at Hickory Ridge and struggled with Street shooting a 58 and Burtis' 46, but both rebounded in big ways, maybe none bigger than Street, who improved by 13 strokes on the front side to finish with a 45, while Burtis had the 41.

Harrisburg head coach Steve Black said that despite the biggest opposition being the course itself, he couldn't have been happier with how Burtis and Street performed.

"Hickory Ridge is a tough golf course, especially for the girls, but I thought they both represented Harrisburg High School very well.

"Alexa had a birdie on No. 2 that helped her front nine score and what worked for her today was that she kept the ball in play," Black added. "She had a couple of bad holes, but she really had her short game going for her."

Massac County won the team portion of the event on the Ohio side with a 382, while Herrin was second with a 404. West Frankfort was third at 420 and Murphysboro was fourth with a 440.
