Law enforcement officials have more questions than answers after a Saturday night incident in an area just south of Ardent Mills in Chester.

According to Chester Police Chief Ryan Coffey, the CPD received a call for assistance at 9:45 p.m. from the Union Pacific Railroad Company in reference to a person possibly hit by a train.

CPD officers responded with assistance from the Chester Fire Department, Randolph County Sheriff's Office and MedStar Ambulance. Police and firefighters conducted a search of the area, but found no one.

Coffey said some miscellaneous items were found in the vicinity of the area in question, but it is not yet clear whether those items are connected to the unidentified person.

Chester Fire Chief Marty Bert told the Herald Tribune the train's conductor reported someone crouched along the tracks. Bert said there was no blood or other evidence on the locomotive that would indicate someone had been struck.

A second area search was conducted at daybreak on Sunday, but again, nothing was found.

The CPD is conducting a follow-up investigation in cooperation with the Union Pacific Railroad.
