Sophomore Football: Harrisburg hangs on to beat Du Quoin

Harrisburg scored early and hung on late to win 15-13 at Du Quoin Tuesday in a game called late in the fourth quarter because of lightning in sophomore football.

Harrisburg's Devin Jaegers intercepted a pass, which led to a 37-yard run by Noah Mayer at the 9:52 mark of the fourth quarter to make it a 15-7 ballgame after Isaiah Saulsberry hooked up with Cole Vaughn for the two-point conversion.

Du Quoin then took the ensuing kickoff 73 yards for the touchdown, but failed to connect on the two-point conversion to tie the game and after that the contest was called due to lightning.

"It was nice to go to DuQuoin and get a win," Harrisburg head coach Kyle McGowan said. "I thought defensively we played really well. Offensively, we played much better the second half as we were able to move the ball up and down the field."

The Bulldogs got on the board first when Saulsberry completed a pass to Vaughn for a 21-yard touchdown at the 3:23 mark of the first as Hunter Smith provided the point after for an early 7-0 lead.

Du Quoin then knotted the score at seven, scoring from one-yard out with 6:57 to play before halftime.

Harrisburg (2-0) will play at West Frankfort on September 21 at 6 p.m.
