Truman Dinner in Du Quoin Sept. 18
"I never did give anybody hell. I just told the truth and they thought it was hell."
-Harry S Truman
Both sides of the political aisle can relate to this quote by the 33rd president of the United States as plans for the Truman Day democrat dinner from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18 at the Elks Lodge in Du Quoin come together.
Republican Gov. Rauner's mandate is to cut spending. Democrats would buy into that--until it hurts families. State employees and other unions followed Rauner to all corners of the Du Quoin State Fair last week to tell the governor that it is hurting.
Those discussions will continue during Truman dinner on the 18th.
The format of the dinner has changed. Off the menu are the political speeches. On the menu is some great barbecue, cole slaw and potato salad with desserts. It's sort of an indoor Democrat picnic, and organizer Becky Tracy says the response is strong.
"We have changed the format to more of a meet and greet," said Tracy. "It's more casual."
State Rep. Jerry Costello will be there as will just-announced 58th district state senate candidate Sheila Simon along with local office seekers Matt Benson and Dallas Bingham, incumbent Kim Kellerman and current officeholders who are not facing re-election.
Tickets are $20 with other sponsorship opportunities. Contact Tracy at 318-1917 for ticketing or more information.
