Chester man steals fire victim's scooter
A Chester man has been charged with theft in excess of $500 after a Saturday night incident that involved a 2013 Wolf Jet II scooter.
Chester Police Chief Ryan Coffey told the Herald Tribune that 35-year-old Jamico A. Marion was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Jail in connection with the alleged theft.
"We got a phone call tip where the scooter might be," Coffey said. "That tip sent us to 317 E. Buena Vista St."
The scooter is owned by Ryan Waltemate, whose home and restaurant - Wally's - burned down in a fire on Aug. 27. The scooter was taken from Wally's lot.
"We got it back thanks to help from the community," Waltemate said. "A neighbor saw the theft take place and let me know on Facebook."
Coffey said the theft was reported at 8:44 p.m. Four officers participated in the investigation and the vehicle was recovered at 11:45 p.m.
Waltemate said Marion had started stripping the scooter when police arrived.
"There was some damage done to it," Waltemate said. "They had started to strip it, but I've got to get it over to my guy to fix it and see what the damage is."
Ultimately, Waltemate is happy for the quick resolution in the case.
"Everything happened the way it needed to to get the guy off the streets and I got my stuff back," he said. "I give thanks to the community for doing so much to help get it back."
