BASEBALL: Warriors win 4th straight, slip by Trico 2-1

Tyler VanZandt delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Du Quoin Middle School their fourth win in a row on the baseball diamond, a 2-1 triumph over visiting Trico on Tuesday afternoon.

The Warriors trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, but were able to scrape across one run in each of the last two innings to grab the win in dramatic fashion.

The Pioneers got their run on a single and a double in the top of the fifth inning, at which point Du Quoin still didn't have their first hit.

That hit came in the bottom of the sixth with two outs, a single by Brian Winters in front of an RBI double by Alex Zimmerman that tied the score.

"We finally broke through in the sixth," said DMS head coach Tim Craft. "Brian had a good hit to get us going and Alex came up and drove him in to tie game."

Zimmerman was also Du Quoin's starting pitcher for the day, and left the hill following a 1-2-3 top of the sixth after allowing one run on three hits and four walks with four strikeouts, but received a no decision.

"Alex didn't have his best stuff today but he gutted through six tough innings and gave us a chance," said Craft.

Owen Bradley retired the side in order for DMS in the top of the seventh, then singled with one out in the bottom of the inning before leaving for courtesy runner Alec Caldwell. Konner Harris was hit by a pitch, then Logan Robinson's base hit loaded the bases up for VanZandt, who delivered the game-winning hit.

"We just kept battling the whole game," Craft said. "Owen, Konner, and Logan gave us good at bats and got on base and then Tyler came up with the huge hit to end the game."

Winters (1-3, R), Zimmerman (1-3, RBI, 2B), Bradley (1-3), Robinson (1-1) and VanZandt (1-3, RBI) had hits for the Warriors against Trico.
