BASEBALL: DMS's Winters one-hits Junior Panthers
Du Quoin's Brian Winters tossed a one-hit shutout and fanned ten Junior Panthers as the Warriors blanked PJHS 5-0 in Wednesday's game at Pinckneyville. Winters also had a stellar day at the plate, cranking three hits and driving in a pair of runs.
"What a day for Brian Winters," said DMS head coach Tim Craft. "He had three huge hits and a complete game one hitter. Defensively, we really made some good plays today."
"We still have one more big game this week. Hopefully we show up ready to play and continue to compete like we have been."
Winters' day was almost even more memorable - he took a no-hitter into the seventh before losing the bid when Wyatt Gale singled with two outs in the inning.
Du Quoin began their offensive damage in the top of the second when Slade West reached on an error and later scored on an RBI base hit by Tyler VanZandt.
Winters singled to start DMS's third then Alex Zimmerman reached on an error before Owen Bradley's two-out double made it 3-0 Warriors.
VanZandt and Winters both doubled in the fourth to tack on a fourth run, then Winters singled home Nick Depyatic in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Winters (3-4, R, 2 RBI, 2B), Zimmerman (1-4, R), Bradley (1-4, RBI, 2B), VanZandt (2-3, R, 2B), Depyatic (1-2, R) and Braeden Pursell (1-4) hit safely for the Warriors.
