Chester resident charged in camper vandalism

A Chester resident was charged with criminal damage to property and obstruction of justice after an Aug. 22 incident in the 1400 block of Allendale St. in Chester.

According to Chester Police Chief Ryan Coffey, 20-year-old Kyle P. Kahmke was arrested after police investigated a vandalism complaint.

Coffey said the windows of a recreational camper had been damaged, along with the windshield of a passenger car.

"We have charged one count for felony criminal damage to property over $300," said Randolph County State's Attorney Jeremy Walker. "(Kahmke) was appointed a public defender."

Information acquired at the scene led officers to Kahmke. A witness told the Herald Tribune the incident resulted as part of a dispute over an ex-girlfriend of Kahmke's that the victim was currently dating.

Coffey said two male juveniles were identified as potential accomplices and the CPD is requesting charges to be filed against one of them regarding obstruction of justice.

"We have taken action against the juvenile involved in the case and I'll leave it at that," Walker said.

Walker said bond was initially set at $15,000, but was later reduced to $5,000 over the objections of the State. Kahmke posted a 10 percent cash bond and was released.

He faces a 1 p.m. preliminary hearing on Sept. 17 at Randolph County Courthouse.

"I have been in contact with the victim about restitution and also his input as far as possible punishment," Walker said.
