FOOTBALL: Indians roll to 46-0 victory over S-V-W-W
One week into his varsity football head coaching career at Du Quoin High School, A.J. Hill has his first victory. The Indians, behind a balanced attack between the run and the pass, poured it on Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn 46-0 Friday night at Van Metre Field.
Zayne Fornear led the Indians' rushing attack with 98 yards on 9 carries. Nine other Du Quoin backs carried the ball as the team rolled to 299 total yards on the ground. Seven Indians caught passes for a total of 199 yards through the air.
"It's definitely nice to kind of have that one off my back," Hill said of his first win. "I knew if we took care of business that we'd have an opportunity to win, and our kids took care of business. Now we can just work on getting better. It's nice to get a win early and get a little confidence, but there's still plenty of things we've got to work on."
Du Quoin got a stop on the Red Devils' opening drive and took over on their own 7-yard line midway through the first quarter. From there, the dominating night began for the red and black offense. Fornear and Anthony Spiller carried most of the load for the Indians on the opening drive, which went 73 yards for a score including Fornear's 8-yard touchdown run with 4:13 left in the opening quarter.
A handful of plays later, S-V-W-W was punting the football again. This time, Du Quoin did things through the air as Vogel completed passes to Cole Hopkins and Braden Tuthill to set up a 28-yard TD pass to Hopkins. Kameron Johnson made his second extra point of the evening to put the Indians up 14-0 with 10:41 to go in the first half.
Du Quoin's schedule toughens up in week two as the Indians (1-0) travel to Harrisburg to take on the Bulldogs (0-1), who fought a tough Mt. Carmel team in week one before falling 44-31.
