BASEBALL: Zimmerman, Warriors shut out Sesser-Valier
Alex Zimmerman tossed a three-hit shutout and was 3-for-3 at the plate, helping Du Quoin blank Sesser-Valier 3-0 in Monday's junior high baseball matchup at The Ballpark at DHS.
The right-handed hurler got all the run support he would need in the bottom of the first inning. Brian Winters led off with a double, Zimmerman singled, then Braeden Pursell knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field. Konner Harris later doubled with two outs to make it 2-0 Warriors.
Zimmerman didn't allow a hit until the top of the fourth and faced just two batters over the minimum on the day, striking out four and walking none. The defense was solid behind him as well, committing just one error and turning a pair of double plays.
"Alex threw a great game today.," said DMS head baseball coach Tim Craft. "He worked ahead of hitters and let his defense make plays behind him."
"Today was just a good ball game. Two good teams, two good pitchers, it was a lot of fun to watch."
Winters (1-4, R, 2B), Zimmerman (3-3, 2 R, 2B), Pursell (1-2, RBI, SAC), Harris (1-1, RBI, 2B, BB, SAC) and Owen Bradley (1-3) had Du Quoin's seven hits against Sesser-Valier.
DMS (5-1) travels to Murphysboro on Tuesday afternoon.
