Bill McNew

William Clabe "Bill" McNew, age 80 of Harrisburg, passed away at 4:07 PM, August 19, 2015 at his residence in Harrisburg.

Bill was born on January 8, 1935 to the late Claude and Gladys (Tanner) McNew in Carrier Mills, Illinois. Bill married Joan Hefner on September 8, 1955 and she survives in Harrisburg. Bill was an educator and principal in the Harrisburg public school system. He was a member of McKinley Avenue Baptist Church where he was a deacon for 41 years. Bill was a registered official for basketball and baseball for close to fifty years. He enjoyed playing golf with his golfing buddies; and he also enjoyed the winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama with friends.

Bill is survived by his wife, Joan McNew of Harrisburg, son, Keith McNew and wife Debbie of Palm City, Florida; son, Brian McNew and wife Cindy, of Waterloo, Illinois; daughter, Sheri Mathis and husband Mark of Harrisburg; seven grandchildren: Nicholas McNew and wife Amy of Waterloo, Illinois; Bethany Mathis of Pontoon Beach, Illinois; Dylan McNew of Waterloo, Illinois; Blake Mathis and wife Bethany D. of Harrisburg; Kim Bastin and husband Jimmy of East Parrish, Florida; Katherine Hite of Owensboro, Kentucky; and Kendyl McNew of Palm City, Florida; eight great-grandchildren: Hayden Mathis, Taylor Mathis, Jackson Mathis, Shane McNew, Nichole McNew, Olivia Ogilvie, Sydnee Ogilvie and Reagan Ogilvie; aunts, Nellie Mae Black of Louisville, Kentucky, and Mabel Clements of Carrier Mills, brother-in-law, Wayman Hefner and wife Sharon; brother-in-law Nick Hefner and wife Brenda; sister-in-law, Myrna Jones; brother-in-law, Leo Hefner and wife Sue; sister-in-law, Cheryl Cantrell and husband Kenny.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother-in-law, Zan Hefner.

Funeral services for William Clabe "Bill" McNew will be held at 1 PM, Saturday, August 22, 2015 at McKinley Avenue Baptist Church. Rev. Billy Dye, Jr. will officiate and burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 AM to 1 PM, Saturday, August 22, 2015 at McKinley Avenue Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois Blue East Team or McKinley Avenue Baptist Church of Harrisburg.
