BASEBALL: Warriors crush Chester, 16-0

In dominating fashion, Du Quoin improved to 4-0 in junior high baseball on Thursday afternoon, crushing Chester 16-0 on the road and holding the Yellow Jackets to a single hit.

Brian Winters pitched a 1-2-3 first inning with a pair of strikeouts as the starter, then Ethan Zettler finished Chester off with three scoreless frames, allowing one hit with four K's.

"Ethan Zettler did a great job in relief," said DMS head coach Tim Craft. "It was good to see us come out and score a lot of runs early and give some other players a chance to play."

RBI singles by Braeden Pursell and Owen Bradley, along with a sacrifice fly from Tyler VanZandt, put the Warriors up 4-0 after an inning. Du Quoin really put the hammer down in the top of the second, though, sending fifteen batters to the dish after the first eight reached base safely.

Winters started the ten-run rally with a base hit, Slade West drove in two with a double, and Trae Horn singled home a run before Chester recorded the first out on an RBI ground-out from the bat of Nick Depyatic. Winter followed with his second hit of the inning, an RBI single, and four walks later the Warriors were in complete command up 14-0.

Zettler and Logan Robinson both added RBIs in the third to complete the scoring.

Winters (2-2, 3 R, BB), Pursell (1-2, RBI, BB), West (1-1, 2 RBI, 2B, BB), Robinson (1-1, RBI, BB), Bradley (1-2, R), Horn (1-2, RBI) and David Lee (1-1) had the hits for Du Quoin.

DMS (4-0) hosts a tournament this Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m. at The Ballpark at DHS.
