SOFTBALL: DMS beaten by Benton, 11-1

The Lady Warriors' offensive struggles continued on Monday in their home opener, as Du Quoin Middle School fell 11-1 to Benton, totaling just three hits while committing half a dozen errors in the field.

One of those miscues allowed the Rangerettes to jump on top 1-0 in the top of the first inning as Maddi Wallace doubled in Morgan Reno, who reached on an error with one out.

Two more DMS errors coupled with a pair of walks issued by starting pitcher Maddie Robison led to Benton's big inning in the bottom of the second. Mady McLain (two-run single) and Olivia Wilkey (double) provided RBIs in the five-run frame for the Rangerettes, who led 6-0 before Du Quoin got on the board.

Ella Hirsch gave the Warriors their run in the top of the third when she tripled and scored on an error in left field to make it 6-1, but Du Quoin would strand all four base runners they had the rest of the way.

Benton pitcher Addison Miller picked up the win in the circle allowing three hits and three walks to go along with three strikeouts.

Hirsch (1-4, R, 3B), Robison (1-3) and Emily Boyett (1-2) had the hits for the Lady Warriors. Robison gave up eight hits and eight walks and struck out seven.

"I really thought Robison threw well today," said DMS head coach Jason James. "We are still in the process of learning the game. Once we get some confidence and keep our focus things will improve. It's a slow process but we will get there."

DMS (0-3) is at Chester on Thursday afternoon.
