Prep Golf: Starting the season in style

It was a solid start to the season for the Harrisburg High School boys and girls' golf teams.

The Harrisburg boys shot a team total score of 152, beating out five other teams, to take home the top spot at the Mt. Carmel Invitational Monday.

Ben Folwer and Patrick Bittle fired a pair of 36's and finished tied for second individually, while Garrett Jenkins finished sixth after shooting a 39. Bryce Beal turned in a 41 and finished 10th as an individual.

Harrisburg head coach Steve Black couldn't find a lot of fault in his boys' team after winning their first match of the season.

"What I was really pleased with was we got good scores out of the fourth, fifth and sixth spot and that helped in us winning this match," Black said. "Ben, Patrick and Garret, I was confident they would play really well, but Bryce finishing in a tie for 10th was very good."

Following Harrisburg's 152, Mt. Carmel took second with a 154, followed by Hamilton County's 163 for third place. Carmi-White County (185) and Fairfield (259) rounded out the competition.

Jacob Mills finished with a 42 for the Bulldogs, while Camden Schiff shot a 45.

On the girls' side, Harrisburg senior Alexa Burtis started her season in style, firing a front-nine 40 and finished second as an individual.

Skylark Street was the only other golfer to tee it up for the Bulldog girls as she finished with a 56.

"Alexa played very well and that is a bright spot," Black said. "Hopefully, she'll continue to play well and I think she will, she's a good player."

The Harrisburg boys are back in action today (Tuesday), hosting Massac County in a dual match at Shawnee Hills Country Club.
