Middle School Softball: HMS takes second at Marion Tournament
The Harrisburg Middle School softball team took second place over the weekend, falling to Marion 6-3 in the Marion Middle School softball tournament.
The 16-team tournament, saw HMS run through the competition as the Bulldogs knocked off Massac County, Carterville and Johnston City, before falling to Marion.
In the title game, Harrisburg took a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning before Marion scored four runs in the top of the frame for the comeback win.
Hayley Sullivan, Mya King, Kerrigan and Makayla Payne and Hannah Reid all had one hit.
Lydia Miller took the loss in the circle as she went the distance, allowing nine hits, while striking out four and walking four.
Harrisburg 4, Massac County 1
In the semifinal game of the tournament, Miller, Reid and Makayla Payne all had one hit.
Essence Sanders picked up the win, working five innings and allowing seven hits, while striking out three and walking four.
Harrisburg 5, Carterville 4
Miller picked up the win for HMS, striking out two, walking three and allowing five hits over four innings of work.
At the dish, Riley Wright, Makayla Payne, Reid, King, Miller and Sanders all hit safely.
Harrisburg 3, Johnston City 2
In the opening game of the tournament, Sanders got the win in the circle, pitching four innings and giving up seven hits, while striking out two and walking four.
Lexi Williams, Sanders, Miller and King all hit safely for HMS.
Harrisburg 7, Massac County 2
HMS opened the season in style with a 7-2 win over Massac County late last week.
HMS pounded out nine hits on the afternoon as Kerrigan Payne reached base three times, while Lydia Miller had two hits. Essence Sanders, Hayley Sullivan, Hannah Reid, and Makayla Payne all had one hit.
Miller picked up the win in the circle as she worked seven innings, allowing six hits, while striking out three and walking three.
Harrisburg (5-1) opens the conference portion of their season today (Monday) when they travel to Herrin.
