Four transported to hospitals after Turkey Bluffs crash
Three Chester residents, and a fourth from Coulterville, were transported to three different hospitals after a Sunday evening crash at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources' Turkey Bluffs Scenic Overlook.
According to the Randolph County Sheriff's Office crash report, a 1985 Chevrolet Celebrity driven by 23-year-old Travis Miner (of Chester) and a 2002 Chevrolet S-10 driven by 24-year-old Mark J. Rahn (of Chester) were driving on a narrow figure-8 roadway a half-mile west of Pleasant Ridge Road.
The Celebrity was traveling northwest and the S-10 was headed southeast. The report states that each driver was unable to see the other due to tall weeds and grass as the vehicles neared the middle of the figure-8.
Both drivers reportedly applied their brakes, but loose gravel prevented the vehicles from stopping and they collided head-on.
Both Miner and Rahn were cited for reckless driving. Miner was transported to Chester Memorial Hospital, while a passenger in his vehicle, 29-year-old Stephanie Guethle of Chester, was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
Two passengers in Rahn's vehicle were also taken to area hospitals. Twenty-one-year-old Holli Clark, of Chester, was transported to Chester Memorial Hospital, while 22-year-old Dillon Palmer (of Coulterville) was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Palmer was riding in the bed of the S-10 and was ejected in the collision. Randolph County Sheriff Shannon Wolff told the Herald Tribune that none of those involved in the accident were wearing their seatbelts.
When asked if alcohol was a factor in the accident, Wolff said the incident is still under investigation.
The time of the collision was listed as 8 p.m. with Deputy Kyle Colvis responding.
