American Legion: Vallette, Phipps power Post 167 to win over Carrier Mills

Momentum is on the side of the Harrisburg American Legion baseball team and its timing couldn't be better.

Post 167 won its second straight game at the 24th District American Legion Tournament Monday night, knocking off Carrier Mills 5-1 behind a solid showing from Matthew Phipps.

Phipps went the distance, allowing just five hits and one run, while striking out three.

"He just had command the whole game, getting ahead on the count and really pitched well," Harrisburg head coach Doug Emery said.

Post 167 scored five runs on five hits, plating a run in the first, two in the fourth and two in the seventh.

Harrisburg led 3-1 in the seventh when Noah Vallette hit a deep shot to left center after Phipps walked to put Harrisburg up 5-1.

Vallette added a two-run home run, while Austin Hefner, Britton Riden and Drew Woolcott all had one hit.

"We played outstanding defense again, behind a great pitching duel between Phipps and Carrier Mills' McGuire, who also pitched really well," Emery said. "It was a very good game between two good teams, we just happened to come out on the right end this time."

Harrisburg will now play Carmi tonight (Wednesday) at 5 p.m.
