Costello highlights importance of agricultural education at 4-H livestock auction

RED BUD - State Rep. Jerry Costello II, D-Smithton, participated in the annual 4-H livestock auction for Perry, Randolph and Jackson counties by purchasing a pig from a 4-H student.

"4-H is a great learning experience for these kids, and while being able to participate in the auction is always fun, it's equally important as a way to highlight the various facets of knowledge that these kids attain," Costello said. "As chairman of the Agriculture and Conservation committee for the House, I know that numerous studies show the impact of agricultural education for both the students in the programs and also their community, and it's important that we support a key part of life for young people in Southern Illinois."

4-H students sold 81 animals between the three counties, including the pig that Costello purchased. As a longtime supporter of agricultural education, Costello is currently fighting against Gov. Bruce Rauner's plans to suspend funding for agriculture education, county fairs and the University of Illinois extension programs.

Costello has launched a community petition drive urging the governor to reconsider these cuts.
