Chester VFW hosts 2nd annual Wallflower Prom
CHESTER -- The Wallflower "Sweet Revenge" Prom was held for the second time at the Chester VFW on June 6.
The prom, started by Robin Usher, uses the proceeds to donate to two separate organizations - Puppy Rescue 911 and Gunner's Run Rescue. More than $2,700 was raised for the two groups.
"After we talked to all of our friends and knew how many people were going to come, we decided to make it a benefit as well because of how much money it would make," said Andrea Dunn, one of the women that helped put together the prom.
The groups were chosen by the mutual love of dogs between all the women on the prom committee.
"I just got the idea from watching my daughter wear all her prom dresses throughout high school and I remembered how I never did that, so I figured we could have prom now," said Usher.
Although the title of "Sweet Revenge" almost implies it to be for people out of high school, it is open for anyone who would like to attend and join in the festivities, even if they only want to come for the good cause.
"Whether you never went to prom, or you never had a date, or you just wanna have fun, anyone and everyone is welcome," said Usher.
Like any typical high school prom, snacks, a dance floor, a picture background, and a prom queen were provided.
Differing from the usual way of picking the queen to the prom, the ladies in attendance write their names down and are placed in a hat.
The previous years' prom queen draws the new prom queen's name at random - with no favoritism involved.
"That way it's not about looks and it's not a popularity contest - it's just the luck of the draw," said Usher.
Along with Usher, Sheri Kattenbraker, Leah Hammel, Linda Gibbs, Deb Franklin, Terri Brown, Sherrie Tindall and Dunn all helped in making the prom a reality. Tom Tindall, who was the evening's D.J., and Diane Cross also volunteered their time to make the event a success.
Men and women from all around came out to have fun and support the good causes the benefit supplied.
"We originally came out tonight to support a good cause, but it's turning out to be a lot of fun and we're really enjoying it," said Samantha Rhoades, one of the women in attendance.
