Local students qualify to compete at world's largest Junior High rodeo
DENVER, CO-- Four area students have earned a spot to compete at the National High School Rodeo Association's Junior High Division National Competition.
Evan Adams, an eighth grader at Harrisburg Middle School, has earned a position on the Illinois National Junior High Rodeo Team. Adams will be competing in Pole Bending, Barrels and Team Roping events. Cara Herron, an eighth grader at Eldorado Middle School, has earned a position on the Illinois National Junior High Rodeo Team and will compete in Team Roping. Abby Stevens is a sixth grader from Galatia Grade School. Herron has also earned a position on the Illinois National Junior High Rodeo team competing in Barrels, Pole Bending, Team Roping and Ribbon Roping. Trey Tiberio, a sixth grader at Adams School, has earned a position on the Illinois Junior High Rodeo Team as well. Trey will be competing in Bull Riding, Breakaway Roping and Team Roping. In order to qualify for these events, these athletes were required to place in one of the top four places in each event for the 2014-2015 rodeo season. Their hard work and commitment has paid off as each looks forward to their chance to compete in the national competition in Des Moines, Iowa in June.
Featuring roughly 1,000 contestants from 42 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia, the NJHFR is the world's largest junior high rodeo. In addition to competing for more than $75,000 in prizes, contestants will also be vying for more that $100,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named a National Junior High Rodeo National Champion. To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20, based on their combined times in the first two rounds<span class="s1">,</span> to advance to Saturday evening's final round. National Champions will then be determined based on their three-round combined times.
The Saturday championship performance will be televised nationally as part of the Cinch High School Rodeo Tour telecast series on RFD-TV. Live broadcasts of each NJHFR performance will also air online at NHSRATV.com. Performance times are June 21 at p.m. and 9 a.m<span class="s1">.</span> and 7 p.m. each day thereafter.
