Two in custody for December bank robbery
Jeffrey Townsend, 43, and an unnamed male juvenile are in custody for robbing Carrier Mills First Southern Bank in December 2014.
FBI agents apprehended Townsend in Midland, Virginia, about 50 miles south of Washington D.C., on Friday, May 22. He is awaiting extradition to Illinois.
According to a press release from the Saline County Sherriff's Office, shortly before noon on December 10, 2014, a male entered the Carrier Mills bank. He displayed a weapon and demanded cash. The suspect left the bank on foot and entered a waiting car nearby.
A warrant was issued on Friday, May 22 for Townsend, formerly of Winchester, Kentucky and Butte, Montana. At the time of the robbery, Townsend was staying in the Marion-Stonefort area. A male juvenile from rural Stonefort was also taken into custody in connection with the bank robbery on Friday, May 22.
Townsend is being held on a charge of armed robbery. If Townsend signs an extradition waiver, he could be headed back to Saline County by Wednesday. If he challenges the extradition, the process "could take awhile," according to State's Attorney Michael Henshaw.
Cooperation between local and federal officials was essential to identifying and apprehending the suspect, said Keith Brown, Saline County sherriff.
"With great cooperation between agencies, surveillance video and crime lab analysis, we were able to develop a case and apprehend the two suspects without any harm to the public or officers. Overall, we were able to put an end to this case," said Brown.
