Harrisburg Area Farmers Market opens Saturday

This Saturday, May 23 will mark the kickoff of the Harrisburg Area Farmers Market. It will be held every Saturday through the end of the season at the Bonan Building parking lot closest to the road, 540 N. Commercial St. in Harrisburg from 8 a.m. to noon.

In its third year running, the market will offer a variety of locally grown and made produce and baked goods.

Perfect Rooney's will have their angel food cakes, pineapple upside down cakes, peanut butter cookies, snicker doodle cookies and banana bread for sale at Saturday's market. Produce vendors will have early growing items such as lettuce and green onions. As the weather warms up, the variety of produce will expand. Hard Luck Farms will have strawberries and other early produce and Thunder 5 Ranch is bringing fresh eggs, homemade baked goods and early produce. Mike Grant with Grant Farms will have lettuce and onions.

In the previous two years of operations, the market was held at the Saline County Fairgrounds. Vendors and market managers opted for the new location for better visibility, said market Manager Julie Girot.
