SIU Med School names former Harrisburg resident distinguished alumni

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield has honored a former Harrisburg resident, Stephen Raben, MD, with its Distinguished Alumni Award.

The award from the School's Alumni Society Board of Governors recognizes outstanding contributions to medicine and distinguished service to humankind.

Raben is a family medicine physician in rural Illinois. He has<span class="s1"> </span>been medical director of Family Hospice in Belleville<span class="s1"> </span>since 1995 and is also medical director of Belle Manor, an assisted living center for adults with special needs. He co-owns a private practice, Rural Family Medicine Associates in Mascoutah<span class="s1"> </span>and Freeburg<span class="s1"> </span>with fellow alumni Steven Pritchett, MD, 1997; Judith Weis, MD, 1992; Todd Vonderheide, MD, '94 and Paul Reger, MD, SIU Resident Alumni 1994<span class="s1">.</span>

Raben is board certified in family medicine, geriatrics, hospice and palliative medicine. He continues to make home visits<span class="s1"> </span>and provides community education regarding end of life care throughout the region. His nominators called him "dedicated and caring"<span class="s1"> </span>and willing "to go above and beyond" in his practice. "He is the epitome of the family physician," another wrote.

Raben completed his residency at SIU Belleville in 1993. He received his medical degree from SIU School of Medicine (1990) and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1985). He received an associate's degree from Southeastern<span class="s1"> </span>Illinois College in Harrisburg (1983).

Raben was featured in SIU School of Medicine's "Aspects Magazine"<span class="s1"> </span>in 2013, respectively.
