No injuries in Baldwin Lake boat incident
On Sunday, Illinois Conservation Police officers responded to a report of a boat that was swamped by waves and overturned on Baldwin Lake in St. Clair County.
According to an accident report from Illinois Department of Natural Resources Public Information Officer Chris Young, boat owner Herman Heierman, of New Athens, along with his wife and son, traveled several hundred yards out onto Baldwin lake when the motor overheated and stopped running.
The names of the wife and son were not released.
When the motor would not restart, heavy wave action pushed the boat into the riprap on the north levee of Baldwin Lake. The National Weather Service had issued a Lake Wind Advisory earlier in the day.
The wife and son go out of the boat, and Heierman returned home to get a replacement motor. As the motor was loaded onto the boat, the stern turned into the waves, swamping it and causing it to overturn.
The New Athens Fire Department was on scene when Conservation Police arrived, and helped secure the boat to the shore.
Conservation Police towed the overturned boat back to the boat ramp, where New Athens Fire Department personnel helped turn the boat upright so it could be loaded onto a trailer.
The family lost the replacement motor and some other personal items. There were no injuries and the boat was carrying a sufficient number of personal flotation devices.
