Prep Softball: Terriers Tame Harrisburg
For one day, Harrisburg head coach Red Stafford is stuck on a number.
After notching career win No. 400, an achievement the longtime HHS head coach was honored for prior to Wednesday's contest against Carbondale. The Bulldogs followed the ceremonies with a 5-0 loss to the Terriers.
Carbondale, who shared the South Seven Conference title with Marion this season got by on the one thing that Stafford thought his club has shored up: errors.
The Terriers scored one run in the first inning after Harrisburg misplayed a ball in right field and scored three runs in the fifth off an error. A passed ball in the seventh was the last tally for the Terriers.
On the plus side, Harrisburg outhit Carbondale 8-7, but luck was not on the Bulldogs' side Thursday.
"We hit the ball we, but we hit into bad luck the entire ball game," Stafford said. We hit the ball hard all night long, but they made the play defensivley or we hit a line drive or something right at them. I cannot complain how we hit the ball, I just wish we could have got more out of it.
Brittany Hutchison paced the Bulldogs at the plate by going 3-for-4, while Mckenzie Sullivan was 2-for-3. Abby Dalton, Matty Hawkins and Whitney Younger were all 1-for-4.
Hawkins moved to 8-15 on the season, taking the loss in the circle as the freshman right hander went the distance, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits, while striking out four and walking three.
Harrisburg (11-18) will host its senior day today (Thursday) against Galatia at 4:30 p.m., while the Bulldogs will travel to Hardin County on Friday. Harrisburg closes out the week, hosting Du Quoin and Grayville on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
