“Textile art” exhibited at Harrisburg District Library
"Surface Matters," a collection of textile art by Illinois artist Kathy Sands, is the current exhibit at Harrisburg District Library.
The show will be displayed in the library's downstairs community room until July 5, when the artist will host a reception at 2 p.m. At the reception, Sands will talk about the methods she used in producing some of the work in the exhibit.
Sands describes herself as a self-taught artist, saying she has worked with crafts of some kind all her life. Her passion is working with cloth, which she dyes and prints herself using a variety of techniques.
The artist works, teaches and showcases her art at Sands Studio in Norris City, Illinois at a studio she has worked in since 2013. At her studio, she can accommodate classes of up to 10 people.
Sands' art on display in the library includes a series of tapestries. Four of the larger pieces are titled "Sticks and Stones," a biblical reference illustrated in the designs. A triptych, or a work of art divided into three sections, is titled "Unchanging." Also on display is a colorful series Sands refers to as "Jeweltone."
In addition to larger fabric pieces, there are five prints on canvas, several art cards on mats and four silk scarves. Everything in the show is for sale.
Sands is the editor of the weekly newspaper, the Villager's Voice, in Norris City, a position she has held for three years.
The exhibit can be viewed during open hours unless the community room is in use. Call the library at (618) 253-7455 in advance to check.
