Dist. 300 board could discuss basketball positions Thursday
The Du Quoin Board of Education meets Thursday in regular session at 6:30 p.m. and is expected to begin a dialogue in executive session on filling two important coaching positions in the district -- the 8th grade basketball position at the Middle School and the position as head coach of the basketball Indians at DHS.
Wendell Wheeler resigned his coaching position at DHS at the end of the 2014-2015 season and Ryan Heape has resigned his coaching position at DMS.
Supt. Dr. Gary Kelly said there are only internal applicants for the 8th grade position and apparently only external possibilities for the DHS position.
Heape does not want to leave his 8th grade position to take the position at the high school. Instead, Heape wants more time with his family.
The board is expected to discuss filling president Mike Ward's vacancy on the school board. The agenda indicates there is the "potential" naming of a new board member.
Other personnel items include accepting the retirement resignation of longtime 5th grade teacher Loyann Lantzy effective May 28 and accepting the retirement resignation of high school custodian David Krone effective April 30, 2015.
The board is also expected to discuss the employment of a high school mathematics teacher, summer food program workers, Arrow Academy summer school program personnel and the filling of extra-curricular positions. That would include the assignment of a cheerleading sponsor.
The achievements of students will be acknowledged during the recognition portion of the meeting.
The board will also consider the renewal of the worker's compensation insurance and treasurer's bond through the worker's compensation self insurance trust and property, casualty, liability insurance.
The board will be updated on budget developments, will set board meeting dates for next year and air any and all issues with respect to administrator contracts. Members of the DEA at the last meeting aired objections to the issuance of single year contracts.
