Jono Haslett sentenced to six years in IDOC

On April 15, 21-year-old Jonathen E. "Jono" Haslett, of Percy, was sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections by the Honorable Gene Gross.

Pursuant to the negotiated plea, Haslett was recommended to participate in the Illinois Impact Incarceration Program (boot camp) within the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Haslett pleaded guilty to the offense of unlawful possession of methamphetamine manufacturing materials in Percy on January 13.

Specifically, Haslett admitted to possessing Draino, lithium batteries and DampRid with the intent these items would be used to produce methamphetamine.

In exchange for the plea, Haslett will not face federal charges regarding his involvement in the case, unlike his two co-defendants (John G. Haslett and Michael A. Boyt, Jr.), who are currently facing dual charges in state and federal court.

"Mr. Haslett is young and lacked any prior felony convictions; however, our belief is he was actively and heavily involved in the meth 'game' for some time," said Randolph County State's Attorney Jeremy Walker. "For this reason, I did not feel probation was an adequate sentence.

"That being said, the boot camp program will give Mr. Haslett an opportunity to significantly reduce his prison sentence and get back to, hopefully, being a productive member of society."

"If not, he now has a serious conviction and from my standpoint, things do not get easier the second time we see someone convicted of another offense," Walker added. "I want to thank the Randolph County Sheriff's Office and Sparta Police Department in this matter.

"Their joint cooperation is the reason we were able to put this case together. Once the other defendants are dealt with on the federal level, the community will see significant sentences for all involved."
