Prep Softball: Bulldogs fall on road at Massac County
The Harrisburg softball team dropped its sixth straight game Thursday, falling 17-4 on the road at Massac County.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 8-13 overall and 0-7 in SIRR Ohio Division play.
Matty Hawkins fell to 5-11 on the season, picking up the loss in the circle, as the freshman allowed 10 earned runs on 12 hits, while walking four and striking out one.
At the plate, Brittany Hutchinson went 2-for-3 and was joined by Mckenzie Payne, who went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI that came off a two-run home run in the first inning.
Mckenzie Sullivan went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI as well for the Bulldogs.
Harrisburg led 4-0 after the first inning and were down 7-4 going into the bottom of the fourth when the Patriots popped off for 10 runs off three errors by Harrisburg.
"Massac County is the best hitting ballclub we'll face all year," Harrisburg head coach Red Stafford said. "One through nine, they're all very solid and with seven seniors, they just know how to hit.
"That being said, we can't help them out like we did in the fourth inning. We were right there with them and helped them out with three errors. Right now, we're just making too many mental mistakes and you can't do that. You can't give a team like Massac County extra at bats.
Harrisburg will close out the week playing host to Murphysboro today (Friday) at 4:30 p.m. and then will host a round robin invitational, starting Saturday at 11 a.m. with Carmi-White County and Hardin County.
