Prep Softball: Redbirds fly high past Harrisburg
West Frankfort opened the flood gates in the fourth inning, scoring 8 runs as the Redbirds blanked Harrisburg 8-0 in Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference Ohio Division play.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 0-5 in conference play and 8-10 on the season.
Matty Hawkins fell to 5-8 on the season, taking the loss in the circle, as the freshman right hander allowed eight runs (five earned) on eight hits, while striking out five and walking five.
At the plate, Brittany Hutchinson and Jessie Bramlet each went 2-for-3, while Madison Matthews had one hit.
Harrisburg was also without the services of Mckenzie Payne, the Bulldogs' catcher, who suffered a collision at home plate in the loss to Herrin and were without Whitney Younger, who was out with a broken thumb.
Harrisburg is at Massac County today (Monday) and at Benton Tuesday and will host Murphysboro on Friday with all games slated for a 4:30 p.m. start.
The Bulldogs will then host Carmi-White County and Hardin County Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.

JOHNSTON CITY - The Galatia-Thompsonville softball team went 1-1 over the weekend at the Johnston City Invitational, knocking off the host Indians 8-2 and falling in eight innings to Fairfield 1-0.
In the win against JC, Elizabeth Sloan pulled double duty, getting the win on the mound, going five innings, and allowing just one run on one hit, while striking out two.
Sloan also cranked a solo home run in the sixth inning, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate for the Bearcats.
Dani Reynolds worked the last two innings in the circle for G-T, allowing one run on two hits, while striking out three and walking three.
Kennedy Harris went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and Emma Ragan was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
In the loss to Fairfield, the Bearcats (6-7) had just two hits as Katie Linsley and Ragan each reached base.
Brooke Burris took the loss, going the distance and allowing one run on three hits, while striking out six and walking four.
