Courthouse flag restored

During a recent wet, wild and windy morning the rope holding the flag to the pole at the Saline County Courthouse snapped, causing the flag to splat on the rain-drenched Poplar Street.

The Harrisburg American Legion - in keeping with flag tradition - retired the flag.

Monday morning a portion of Poplar Street was blocked to install a new flag, new rope and to oil the pulley at the top. Harrisburg firefighters used the department's Ladder 1 truck for the cause as law enforcement provided traffic control.

Firefighter Capt. Donnie Wall remained at the ground level while Rick Mallady performed the ladder work. Chief John Gunning manned the station.

Sheriff Keith Brown said he appreciated the Fire Department's efforts.
