Prep Baseball, Harrisburg, Carrier Mills-Stonefort picks up wins, Gallatin falls at Goreville
Sykes Thompson struggled early, but found his rhythm helping Harrisburg to a 4-1 win over Vernon Hills Monday at Rent One Park in Marion.
The senior right hander picked up his first win of the season, although the start looked bleaked as Thompson issued four walks in the first two innings.
Thompson adjusted and didn't allow another walk, going the distance and allowing one earned run on three hits, while striking out seven.
At the plate, Thompson was just as good, going 2-for-2 with a run scored.
Matthew Phipps also notched a pair of hits on the day, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Austin Hefner, Cooper Thompson, Bryce Emery, Austin Johnson and Britton Riden all had one hit on the day. Emery drove in two runs, while Patrick Bittle and Hefner each had an RBI.
Vernon Hills, who got a run in the first inning, got behind 2-1 after two innings and in the bottom of the fifth, Harrisburg plated two more runs when with the bases loaded and two outs, Emery found a gap for his two RBI.
Harrisburg returns to action today, playing host to Seneca at 11 a.m. and will play host to Johnston City Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The Bulldogs host plains at 11 a.m. on Friday and conclude the week with a 11 a.m. game against Carterville, also at Doris Heights.
Carrier Mills-Stonefort 6, Hamilton County 1
Loren Whiting improved to 2-0 as Carrier Mills-Stonefort went to 3-1 on the season with a 6-1 win over Hamilton County
Whiting went the distance, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out six.
Darren Betz, Jonah Crowder and Betz had an RBI in the first inning as the Wildcats took a 2-0 lead.
In the second, Anthony Kalodner scored Bryce Batson and in the fifth inning, Betz provided a two-run single.
Goreville 12, Gallatin County 0
Kory Hise and Nathan Shults each went 1-for-2 in a 12-0 loss to Goreville Monday.
Hise got the start and went one inning on the mound, giving up three earned runs, while Patrick Clark pitched an inning ,giving up two earned runs. Hunter Walters also went one inning, allowing two earned runs, while Seth Ramsey pitched one inning and struck out two.
