Forest Service embarks on spring burning
The U.S. Forest Service was conducting a controlled burn on the Eagle Mountains area Monday as part of a spring burning plan.
The Forest Service was to burn several areas between March 28 and April 1. White smoke on the mountain could be seen throughout the area.
The acreage of each prescribed burn varies and people nearby may not notice smoke coming from these burns. However, the locations of the larger areas that may be prescribed burned, weather permitting are:
East of McClure in Alexander County (about 1,200 acres)
East of Harrisburg in Saline County (about 1,600 acres)
Southeast of New Burnside in Johnson County (about 600 acres)
Johnson Creek Recreation Area in Jackson County (about 475 acres)
Fire personnel will carefully monitor smoke being generated during the prescribed burn. Members of the public can expect the bulk of smoke to be visible in mid-afternoon and dissipate late in the afternoon. Smoke will likely be most noticeable around the communities of Ware, Jonesboro, Herod, Equality, New Burnside, Eddyville and around Kinkaid Lake.
