UPDATE: Two more Lenten Fish Fries
Each Friday during Lent Catholics observe Friday as a day of fast from meat and poultry.
Few these days remember when that was a year round discipline.
Vatican II brought an end to the year round observance of the fast - and many a student in the 1960s discussed the eternal destiny of prior offenders of the fast.
But theological hairsplitting aside, Catholics now observe the Friday fast from meat and poultry.
The Women's Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Harrisburg serve fish every Friday during Lent except Good Friday and the turnout is great.
Lots of fans of fried fish out there.
They open the door at 5 p.m. and serve the dining room of the community center and carry out until 7 p.m.
Parishioners are possibly the best represented group but patrons come from all denominations around the area said Fr. Abraham Adejoh.
Each Friday following Ash Wednesday until the last Friday before Holy Week about 300 meals are served in the dining room and 300 carry out meals go out the door.
"The proceeds go to the women's auxiliary for charitable projects," said Cheryl Matic who was taking money for the carry out dinners Friday. "An adult meal includes three fillets, a potato, slaw, hush puppies and corn fritters."
The charities chosen by the Knights of Columbus Women's Auxiliary are the Christian Community and Compassion Center, scholarship fund, summer camp program, football dinner, Cardinal Newman Charities in Carbondale and operating expenses for the Women's Auxiliary.
Adult meals are $10, children's $5.
The next fish fry is 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and since the weather snowed out two fish fries there will be an additional one scheduled 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. April 10.
