Shawnee Community Center hits the ground running
The new Shawnee Community Center, located in the Bonan Business Center in Harrisburg, is making a real impact in the area of community oriented recreation, sports and fitness.
The center is the brainchild of Rebecca Wyatt Nevitt, a local personal fitness trainer. The center has gone from empty rooms to a full-fledged recreation site in the few months since the project's beginning late last fall. Going from bare walls to a completely equipped center that caters to youths, adults and seniors with sports, daycare, fitness programs, craft and educational programs, the center is beginning its first year of activities.
"It's going great," said Nevitt. "We have a lot of kids in after school every day and we are registering for our kids' summer sports camps right now. The summer looks like a lot of fun here!"
The Shawnee Community Center offers a wide range of activities and programs geared towards providing healthy, safe and enjoyable activities for everyone from kids to seniors. The summer kids' programs will center on sports with volleyball, basketball, indoor soccer and rock wall climbing among the activities offered. The center also provides daycare facilities for younger children.
"We are going to make this a one stop shop for kids and seniors activities this summer," Nevitt said.
This summer, Nancy Drone, a Harrisburg teacher is helping out by teaching art classes at the center. Also, Drone is teaching fully state accredited classes in art and physical education for children being home schooled.
"We are lucky to have her helping us this summer," Nevitt said.
Nevitt plans to see that the center provide whatever it can in the area of fun, healthy and safe activities for the community .The center is open from noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Two Internet sites are available with information, shawneecommunitycenter.org and the centers Facebook page at Shawnee Community Center. Both sites have complete information on scheduling of events, programs and membership rates.
