Shimkus shares views on Israel
U.S. Rep. John Shimkus spoke to Saline County Republicans Saturday night during the Lincoln Day Dinner at Morello's Restaurant and Catering in Harrisburg.
"Our country has only one ally in the middle-east who shares our principles of democracy, freedom and the rule of law. That is Israel," Shimkus said.
He said Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu daily has to be concerned with the survival of his country.
"You have done me a great honor, making me your representative. I am humbled to do the job you have asked me to do," he said.
Shimkus said that Netanyahu needs to communicate with the Congress and the American people and should be welcome to speak at any time.
"We need to hear what he has to say," Shimkus said.
Shimkus shares Netanyahu's opinion that the tentative nuclear arms agreement is a pathway for Iran to get the bomb. Shimkus said he believes it would be bad for Iran to have the bomb even 10 years hence.
The crowd filled the banquet facility at Morello's and was largely in favor of Shimkus' view on Israel.
