Downed wire on bus found to not be electric

What could have been a dangerous situation on Tuesday turned out not to be as Sparta emergency responders were initially paged out to respond to the report of a downed power line on a school bus.

"There were some kids causing a disturbance on the bus," Sparta Police Chief Sean Lukes said. "The bus pulled into an empty parking lot and the beacon on top hit a low-hanging cable wire."

Lukes said the wire was found not to be electric, but the Sparta Fire Department and workers with Ameren Illinois were called out for safety reasons. The parking lot where the bus stopped at is on South St. Louis Street, also known as Route 4, where the old Iron Ford dealership used to be.

"It was a scary situation at first when we found out there were still kids on the bus," said Lukes, who did not have the number of children who were on the bus.

Lukes said the report was called in at 3:15 p.m.
