Steeleville BOE approves dual-credit classes
The Steeleville District 138 Board of Education met in regular session on Monday and approved a pair of dual-credit classes with Southwestern Illinois College for the 2015-16 school year.
American History and World History are the two classes and both could be offered as dual credit for the first time.
"We're kinda excited to be able to offer that," said District Superintendent Stephanie Mulholland. "I'm not sure if they will be offered yet, it will be dependent on student interest.
"But it is nice to have options."
The board also approved a transition Algebra class for the next school year and set the date of Steeleville High School's graduation as May 16 at 4 p.m.
"This transition Algebra is a review of Algebra II concepts and some geometry also," Mulholland said. "That is the state's course description. It's not remedial, it's offered for credit."
Mulholland said the Algebra class is one that will be offered in-district.
"The progression of math for most students goes Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and then Trigonometry," Mulholland said. "Some have an option for Pre-Algebra. We also have an opportunity for students to double-up on classes if they want to."
Under informational items, the board discussed students who want to be in a the district's Cooperative Vocational Education program being supervised by a parent.
"Currently, we have not allowed a parent to supervise and issue a grade for that class," Mulholland said. "There could be a situation where they work with the student, but not issue a grade.
"It's the issuing of a grade that's the sticking point."
Mulholland said the board has asked for some additional information and that board members were split on the issue.
"If they students are interested in the work program, they find a place they want to work," Mulholland said. "John Sutton makes contact with the business and arranges the hours the students will be working and the expectations."
In other action, the board approved Aaron Fiene and Jacob Wente as volunteer baseball coaches at Steeleville High School and Hannah Trevathan and Justine Knop as volunteer "C" team volleyball coaches at Chester Grade School.
Both Trevathan and Knop are students at Steeleville High School.
"Hannah is a junior and Justine is a senior," Mulholland said. "I stay and watch the practices and handle any discipline."
