OBITUARY: John Haney
John Haney, 88, of rural Harrisburg, passed away at 11:50 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind.
He was born on Feb. 4, 1927, in the Somerset community of Saline County, one of 10 children of Thomas and Lillie May (Stone) Haney. On July 12, 1948, he married Oneda Flowers, and they shared 66 years together.
John proudly served his country as a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a retired truck driver. John was a member of the former Sulphur Springs Baptist Church and attended the Spring Valley Social Brethren Church the last few years.
John is survived by his loving wife, Oneda Haney of Harrisburg; 10 children, John M. and Melody (Stanford) Haney, Donald and Vicki (Workman) Haney, Sharon Mattingly, all of Harrisburg, Karen (David) Baker of Raleigh, Glendle Haney of Harrisburg, Gary Haney of Crossville, Anita Beth (Henry) Tison of Harrisburg, Archie Haney Sr. of Murray, Ky., Leisa (Mike) Horn of Broughton and Lyndell Haney of Harrisburg; 32 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his siblings, Minnie Haney, Edgar Haney, Nellie Cummins, William Haney, Mary C. Porter, Thomas Elmer Haney, Pauline Williams, Floyd "Buddy" Haney and Della May Wallace; several nieces and nephews; and one grandson, Randall Wayne Haney.
Visitation for John will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015, at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Equality. Funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015, with the Rev. Leroy Hicks officiating. Burial will be at the Coffee Cemetery at the Somerset community of Harrisburg with military rites by Harrisburg American Legion. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to the John Haney Memorial Fund to offset expenses.
