Prep Girls Hoops: Eldorado closes out season in style; Harrisburg falls at Herrin

The Eldorado High School girls' basketball team closed out the season, winning seven of their last nine and three in a row with a 48-34 victory over Mt. Carmel Saturday night at Duff-Kingston Gymnasium.

Paige Zertuche scored a team-high 17 points, while Abby Steed scored 11 as both finished in double figures for the Eagles.

Jacqlyn Artman added nine points, while Caitlin Stafford scored six points. Dresdyn Bramlet and Riley Duckworth both scored two points, while Brooklyn Peavler tossed in a free throw.

Eldorado opened the game with a 14-9 lead and led 21-13 at the break. The Eagles broke the game open in the third quarter as they took a 26-19 lead into the final quarter of play.

Eldorado 58, Vienna 41

Stafford led a balanced scoring attack that finished with three Eagles in double figures as she scored a team-high 17 points, followed by 12 from Steed and another dozen from Zertuche.

Artman chipped in with seven points, while Peavler finished with four points. Duckworth and Bramlet each scored three points a piece.

Herrin 64, Harrisburg 49

Alexa Burtis and Kelsey Hobbs each finished in double figures as Harrisburg fell to Herrin 64-49 on the road last Thursday.

Burtis went 3-of-14 from the field, but knocked down 9-of-11 free throws to finish with 17 points, while Hobbs went 3-for-14 from the field and 4-of-5 from the line for 12 points.

Matty Hawkins scored six points, while Lilee Robinson and Hannah Bartok each finished with five points. Whitney Younger added four points in the loss for the Bulldogs.

Harrisburg and Herrin finished the first knotted at 12, but the Tigers outscored Harrisburg 18-11 in the second to take a 30-23 lead into the locker room. Herrin then followed that with a 17-10 third quarter to lead 47-33 going into the final eight minutes of action.

Harrisburg shot 14-for-56 against the Tigers and went 4-for-30 from beyond the arc and finished 17-for-26 from the foul stripe.

Herrin went 23-for-54 from the floor and 14-for-20 from the foul stripe.

The Herrin junior varsity team posted a 52-20 win over Harrisburg.

Lotte Miller scored 10 for the Bulldogs, while Toni Crisp finished with five. Jenny Buchanan tacked on three, while Hannah Finley had two points.
