Prep Hoops: Bearcats roar to first win of season

Galatia's Luke Lawrence scored a game-high 18 points at the Bearcats picked up their first conference win of the season, beating Thompsonville 69-58 Tuesday night.

Galatia is now 1-6 overall and 1-4 in Greater Egyptian Conference play, while the Tigers drop to 0-13 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Devon Verbeck tacked on 12 for Galatia to also finish in double figures, while Ben Mitchell and Austin Stricklin each netted nine points. Ethan Patterson added eight points, while Sean Mondino chipped in with seven points. Kody Matthews knocked down three free throws and Shad Mattingly had one free throw.

Galatia fell behind 13-10 after one quarter, but were able to outscore Thompsonville 9-7 in the second frame to go into the locker room down one, 20-19.

In the third period, the Bearcats went on the offensive, outscoring the Tigers 21-10 and cruised in the fourth for their first win of the year.

"We found a good defensive tempo in the second half and it fed into our offense picking up," Galatia head coach Kendall Hankins said. "We handled (Thompsonville's) full court press effectively. Luke shot the ball extremely good from mid range. Sean Mondino paced our defensive intensity in the second quarter and Ethan Patterson (back from a finger injury 3 weeks ago) played the spark plug in second half. Overall, it was a great team effort with the kids playing roles and focusing on team success."
