BOYS BASKETBALL: Elverado wins Dongola Tournament
With victories over Joppa and Pope County, along with a four-point loss to the tournament host, Elverado finished 2-1 at the Dongola Holiday Tournament, winning the event championship by virtue of tie-breaking procedures.
Falcons Luke Jones and Tyler Funk were both named to the all-tournament team for EHS. Funk led the Falcons in scoring for the two-day tournament with a total of 61 points in three games, Jones scored 42 total points.
Dongola slipped past the Falcons on Friday, 74-70, thanks to a 26-13 fourth quarter that erased a nine-point Elverado lead after three periods. The loss overshadowed a magnificent individual effort by Funk, who poured in 28 points on a dozen two-pointers and a perfect four-for-four showing at the free throw line.
Justin Sarensen (18 points), Jones (11), Sage Sarensen (9), Drake Horn (2) and Joe Ralph (2) also scored for EHS against Dongola.
But the Falcons were the class of the tournament from that point on - racing to a 74-56 victory over Pope County on Friday night and a 69-47 win over Joppa on Saturday.
Funk (17 points), Jones (16), Alec Valerius (12) and Sage Sarensen (10) were all in double figures in the win over Pope County. Horn added eight points, Justin Sarensen seven, Chase Cross three and Clayton Funk one.
Against Joppa, the Falcons again had four players reach double-digit scoring totals. Sage Sarensen hit five triples on his way to a team-high 21 points. Jones added 17 points, including 9-of-10 at the charity stripe, Funk had 16, Justin Sarensen 15.
Roger Langguth III also saw action for EHS during the tournament, while Brendan Garcia and Nolan Waller both sat out with injuries.
The Falcons (5-8), coached by Tim Davis, are off until January 6 when they travel to Sesser-Valier.
