OBITUARY: Carroll "Smokey" Harrelson

Carroll "Smokey" Harrelson, 101 of Ridgway, passed away at 10:11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 17, 2014, at the Ridgway Manor Nursing Home in Ridgway.

He was born on Dec. 4, in 1912 in Ridgway, the son of Rufus and Bertha Jane (Rodgers) Harrelson. He married Kathryn "Peggy" O'Neal on May 26, 1954, who preceded him in death on Sept. 26, 1998. Smokey remarried on July 25, 1999, to Carol Joan McGrew.

He was a retired mechanic and coal miner. Smokey was a member of the Ridgway Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Carol Joan Harrelson of Carterville; one son, Carroll and wife Debbie Harrelson of Ridgway; two daughters, Hazel and husband Jerry Potts of Eldorado and Mary Krikie Stone of Eldorado; three stepsons, B.J. and wife Rosemary Moore of Harrisburg, Larry and wife Elaine Moore of Eddyville and Terry Moore of Shawneetown; one stepdaughter, Peggy and husband Ron Martis of Carbondale; 10 grandchildren, Amy Pease, Greg Krikie, Jimmy Krikie, Jerry Lee Potts Jr., Gary Potts, Tamara Jackson, Jeff Moore, Larry J. Moore, Michelle Anglin and Laura Martis; 16 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Smokey was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Peggy Harrelson; one son, Jimmy Krikie; one brother, Rufus Harrelson Jr.; five sisters, Lillian Johnson, Dora Harrelson, Beth Nelson, Pearl Evitt and Ruth Wood; one granddaughter, Chrisandra Williams; and a great-granddaughter, Molly Young.

Visitation for Smokey will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014, at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Ridgway. Funeral service will be at the funeral home at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, with Pastor B.J. Moore officiating. Burial will be at the Elmwood Cemetery near Equality.
