OBITUARY: Dorothy Lucille (Sutton) Colbert

Dorothy Lucille (Sutton) Colbert, age 90, of Junction, died Monday Nov. 3, 2014, at McLeansboro at the Hamilton Memorial Nursing Center.

She was born Jan. 6, 1924, in Eldorado, the daughter of Wilfred and Dixie Sutton. She was married to Hershel Colbert on Nov. 17, 1945, at Morganfield, Ky. He preceded her in death in 1988. She was a homemaker on the family farm that raised crops and livestock in the Eagle Creek Township of Gallatin County. She was a member of Pisgah General Baptist Church and served as a Sunday School teacher.

Survivors include two sons, Dale (Cecilia) Colbert of Shawneetown and Terry (Mary) Colbert of Dyersburg, Tenn. Four grandchildren include Suzanne Renee (Colbert) Ferguson of Obion, Tenn., James Colbert of Junction, Keith Colbert of Harrisburg and Curtis Colbert of Dyersburg, Tenn. Six great-grandchildren include Cory and Olivia Ferguson of Obion, Tenn., Mychaela and Morgan Colbert of Harrisburg and Claire and Hope Colbert of Dyersburg, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, John Sutton.

Surviving her are her brothers, Jarrell Sutton of Litchfield and Charles Sutton of Eldorado. She is survived by her sister, Veva Nell Ramsey of Ridgway. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

She attended elementary school at Bixler School for eight years. She attended Eldorado High School and graduated in the class of 1942. She left Eldorado and traveled to Alton to get a job. She and her cousin got a job at the Owens Illinois Glass Company. Later, she worked at Granite City Depot where she worked as a clerk typist. In 1945, she moved back to Eldorado and later met Hershel Colbert whom she married. Her first son was Dale, born Nov. 26, 1946. Her other son, Terry, was born Dec. 15, 1947. She moved to her present home in 1946 and with lots of repair, lived there her remaining years until 2004, close to 58 years.

She worked at several jobs including clerk of Eagle Creek Township, Election Board of Eagle Creek Township, Ridgway Popcorn factory, as waitress at DX Cafe, at a beauty salon and a dress factory.

She will be missed by family as she brightened everyone's day with her laughter and girlish giggle. She saw the best in everyone.

Her funeral will be at the Watson's Funeral Home of Eldorado 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to service time at 11 a.m. The Rev. Chris Marsh will conduct the funeral.
