The great food just keeps coming, courtesy of Du Quoin's churches; St. John's United Church of Christ sausage supper is Saturday, Nov. 1
Hungry for some good old fashioned pork sausage and kraut? St John's United Church of Christ will once again be holding a sausage supper on Nov. 1. The Sausage supper was a tradition started by the church in the 1970's around the time they were celebrating their 100th anniversary. They went back to their German heritage and made the pork sausage from scratch using a secret recipe and served it up with sauerkraut and turnips. It became a tradition every year after that and was much anticipated by people from all over Southern Illinois.
In the early years the money was used to help offset bills to keep the church going through the year. After taking several years off, they decided to bring the dinner back as a way to raise money for community charities. The suppers were held off and on for a several years. The past couple of years they broke away from having a traditional dinner and just sold link sausage. This year it was decided to bring the dinner back.
The all you can eat dinner includes our special recipe pork sausage, mashed potatoes, green beans, sauerkraut, drink and a dessert and will be served buffet style from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 1, 2014 in the church dining hall at 20 S. Hickory Street in Du Quoin. Tickets are $10 per person, $5 for children 4-11 years of age, and children age 3 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any church member or they can be purchased at the door. Carry-outs will be available. Link sausage will be available for sale on a first come-first serve basis for $5 per pound the night of the supper while supplies last.
